Following a national demonstration calling for JUSTICE, which was held in the wake of the brutal assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, activists within the Civil Society Network yesterday presented the President of Malta, Her Excellency Marie Louise Coleiro Preca with a written appeal.
The assassination, they held, is a culmination of an assault that has taken place on Malta’s rule of law and the systematic breakdown of Malta’s institutions. They informed the President that they had demanded the resignation of the Attorney General and of the Police Commissioner and their reappointment by two-thirds majority of parliament. The request would also be sent to the Prime Minister by the people.
The activists asked the President to exercise her moral authority to protect the people, our institutions and the rule of law. This, they argued, was important to ensure that the right to exercise basic freedoms in Malta is not eroded.
The President, on her part, welcomed the activists, thanking them for their commitment to the country. She noted that both constitutional reform and the strengthening of institutions were considered a priority for the main parties in Malta. She undertook to do her utmost, within the powers of her function, to unite the Maltese behind a call for a better future.
